Fresh severe conception is apparently preoccupied with the metaphors and ideas of early Christianity, particularly the faith of Paul. The haunting of secular proposal through the very faith it seeks to beat could appear outstanding at the beginning, yet Ward Blanton argues that this fresh go back via theorists to the assets of early Christianity has precedent in smooth and ostensibly secularizing philosophy, from Kant to Heidegger.

The result is The Epistle to the Romans. The first edition (1919) still explored the idea that the ‘world of Jesus’ is present in the world whose character had been disclosed by the war as godless and evil, and that it grows somehow organically from small beginnings to conquer godlessness and evil, similar to the way in which the Spirit transforms the materiality of existence. In the second edition (1922), on which we shall focus here, this organic model is relinquished and replaced by the radically dialectical character of the ‘theology of crisis’.
In this sense, God’s revelations are to be understood as ‘conceivable testimonies of the inconceivable’. But what of theology? Is it possible on such dialectical foundations? Barth concedes that the concern of theology is justified. 11 There is a concern for theology to be taught by the Bible about the meaning of the Word of God as it passes from its source and becomes a human word. , the Word of God as it becomes a human word, against all other human culture or perversions of culture. There is even a concern for systematic theology to explore the boundaries defined for human beings and to state the question of God that is posed by the human witness to the Word of God and by the fact of human limitation.
